One of
TOP's Youngest Family Members
Jessie
An Jolie was born 2002 in Danang, the city where her adoptive father,
Daniel, served as a Marine. Daniel and his wife Pamela have traveled with
us as participants.
While participating in one of TOP's
humanitarian projects at an orphanage in Hoi An, Daniel and Pamela were
touched by a little girl who lives in the facility. At that moment, they
realized their dream to adopt a child from Vietnam. While that thought was
conceived in Hoi An, Pham Hoai An was conceived in Danang. This was the
child, who after a long, emotional, and intensive process, would become
their daughter.
Seventeen months and two trips to Danang
later, their dream came true. On Fathers' Day, 2002 Daniel held his
daughter in Danang for the first time. Then in September they returned for
a tearful Giving and Receiving ceremony, accompanied by Pamela's parents
and Jessie's birth mother. Jessie's birth mother could not care for her
baby, and made the sacrifice to have her adopted. Pamela wrote "She was
born in Danang, where Daniel served his time during the war. Just another
manifestation of Daniel's healing process. She has brought us all together
from two worlds to let us experience open hearts, forgiveness, healing,
and love in the practice of caring for a little girl."
Pamela and Daniel plan to continue to
return to Vietnam so that Jessie can experience her Vietnamese heritage.
Daniel said he is happy to have new memories of Vietnam--ones of life and
love. For decades Vietnam has been a part of Daniel's life. Now it is more
than ever. Jessie has brought him full circle.
